In Loving Memory

"Gangstarr one of the best yet", proclaimed Guru whos real name was Keith Elam, in one of the most popular hip hop tracks of the 90's, a track written down at the time when he joined forces with dj premier consisting the band's most powerful lineup since Gangstarr were formed back in 1987. Guru, a Boston native who took an interest in fashion before pursuing a rap career, was first known as MC Keithy E. After the formation of Gangstarr the band released six critically acclaimed and influential albums from 1989 to 2003 including two certified gold in the United States. The band's work took the east coast in the early 90's by storm especially through guru's cutting edge, yet not aggressive, lyrics that dealt with everyday social issues.Guru also released some material as a solo artist with the Jazzmatazz project, which i was lucky enough to watch live, collaborating with numerous soul, jazz and hip hop artists including MC Solaar, Roy Ayers and Brandford Marsalis just to name a few, in an effort to bridge hip hop with other music genres. The outcome of this gesture was his personal desire to bring older and younger generations of fans closer. Gangstarr were planning a reunion tour but sadly enough cancer proved to be stronger and on April 19 2010, Guru passed away at the age of 48. After his death his long time partner dj premier produced a tribute mix and Guru's nephew Justin Nicholas-Elam Ruff made a 16-minute documentary, in which he narrates the story of his late uncle. She's got the steeze!

Hannah Whittington is a 20 year old (great) lady from Fleet, UK. She loves her style like a fat kid loves cake. She's got a passion for style and interior design and she is planning on rocking the mass media world. Currently studying communication, media and culture. She has an Avant Garde style, integrating both high street and vintage looks.

Who's influenced your life most?
Talking from a fashion perspective  I'd say that I'm influenced by everyone and everything around me. From homeless to avant garde models, streetwear brands, high street brands. Anything really.I would also like to point out favourite musicians at the moment like Arcade fire, Magnetic Man, Biffy Clyro, The XX and many more who influence my life both musically and lyrically.

Any plans you had back in the innocent good old days of 90's but not anymore?
When I was young my passion was to become an air hostess. You know, one of those classy, stylish and sophisticated women. Life's changed from that point.

Tuna of the Day!

To many true hip hop fans, Blackalicious is the epitome of true hip hop. A part of the west-coast rap scene, the lyrics of MC Gift of Gab lean towards a positive way of thinking and state of mind, or as the hip hop artists themselves refer to it, the "positive tip". Maybe because of the good weather, or the generally laid-back way of life on the west coast, these lyricists often dismiss the attitude of the sterotypical rapper who's only concerns seem to be women, their wealth and hurting others, and instead consider the more profound areas of life, always with an air of hope that people can better themselves and become thinkers, not gangsters.

Keep on thinking...

Street Art from the West Coast: Neck Face

Neck Face was born in a not so popular area of California called Stockton 26 years ago. He started messing around with graffiti from a young age and people began noticing his work through stickers that popped up all around the streets of Stockton and Lodi, before spreading to San Fransisco where the name Neck Face is still visible on numerous walls and newspaper stands. To an experienced eye his designs are immediately recognizable through constant depiction of violence and grim images which are usually weird looking humanly shaped monsters such as the one that appears on a "Batman Begins" billboard in Williamsburg,New York. Another unique characteristic of Neck Face's art is the twisted sense of humor that accompanies many of his figures that is nothing more than an attempt to make people laugh as Neck Face himself once stated. Usually refered to as the savior of street art, Neck Face's pieces have appeared on the streets of major cities all across the world from Copenhagen all the way to Tokyo and Sydney, but his most famous piece up to date was situated in New York City's abandoned My Old Lady storefront before being removed. As his street cred grew stronger Neck Face saw his art entering various galleries from Los Angeles to Miami, but also being a skateboard fanatic got him involved in some commercial projects such as collaborating with Baker Skateboards eventually becoming the company's art director. In 2005 directors Ty Evans along with Spike Jonze, who has also worked on various skate videos, created a documentary on Neck Face. Stones Throw Records

Probably one of the most well known and yet underground hip hop labels, the story of Stones Throw goes back in 1996 when Peanut Butter Wolf, a DJ and producer at the time, was trying to figure out a way to make his music heard, music he created with his best friend at the time rapping under the alias "Charisma". The two of them were signed to a label called Hollywood Basics, but the contract didnt last long since the duo was disappointed with the way they were treated in terms of artistic freedom. After Charisma was shot dead in 1993, Peanut Butter Wolf worked as a producer and also released a solo EP on Southpaw records, but the collection of unreleased recordings he had worked on with Charizma made him move on and create Stones Throw Records. The first release, My World Premiere came out in 1996. As years passed by the label grew bigger by acquiring some of the most critically acclaimed names in hip hop including J Dilla, J Rocc and Madlib. Today Stones Throw has two associate labels, Now Again and Soul Cal records and has signed a number of artists experimenting with hip hop, soul and jazz music. Although most record labels are turning away from vinyl, Peanut Butter Wolf's experience as a DJ has turned Stones Throw on the exact opposite direction showing a strong commitment towards vinyl releases

Being a Dickhead's Cool!

Ed Banger Hook up with Etnies

Skateboarding has the unique ability to aid the spread of fashion and music around the world, creating a global culture that shares common interests and passions. By simply riding a board the foundations of all kinds of different projects and collaborations are laid on the street on a daily basis. It was one of those situations that gave birth to the Etnies and Ed Banger collaboration, since both Ed Banger Records founder Busy P and Etnies owner Pierre-Andre Seinzergues are skate fanatics. Although they belong into two different generations sharing a 10+ age gap, the two Paris natives skated the same spots in town, and as they progressed professionally it was evident that the sport was of vital importance to both of them. Officially, Ed Banger began working with Etnies in celebration of the shoe brands 20th anniversary. After several years of talk, Busy P and his art director So Me started working on the “Ednies”, a shape inspired by both skateboarding and music. Released in 2010, the “Ednies” sneaker comes with a custom tongue as well as killer footbed graphics designed by So Me himself.
