Stones Throw Records

Probably one of the most well known and yet underground hip hop labels, the story of Stones Throw goes back in 1996 when Peanut Butter Wolf, a DJ and producer at the time, was trying to figure out a way to make his music heard, music he created with his best friend at the time rapping under the alias "Charisma". The two of them were signed to a label called Hollywood Basics, but the contract didnt last long since the duo was disappointed with the way they were treated in terms of artistic freedom. After Charisma was shot dead in 1993, Peanut Butter Wolf worked as a producer and also released a solo EP on Southpaw records, but the collection of unreleased recordings he had worked on with Charizma made him move on and create Stones Throw Records. The first release, My World Premiere came out in 1996. As years passed by the label grew bigger by acquiring some of the most critically acclaimed names in hip hop including J Dilla, J Rocc and Madlib. Today Stones Throw has two associate labels, Now Again and Soul Cal records and has signed a number of artists experimenting with hip hop, soul and jazz music. Although most record labels are turning away from vinyl, Peanut Butter Wolf's experience as a DJ has turned Stones Throw on the exact opposite direction showing a strong commitment towards vinyl releases
