Jeremyville

Making a name for himself between two continents having a studio in Nolita, Sydney and New York City, Jeremyville is quite a busy man. Besides being an avid tshirt, sneakers and toys collector he can also brag about the fact that he is the first person ever to sit down and write a book on designer toys called Vinyl will Kill in 2003. Being an artist, a product designer, and a illustrator among others makes him quite the talent don't you think? That's the reason why his work can be found all across the world, from the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburg, all the way to Colette in Paris, and even further at the 796 Arts District in Beijing. A true believer in the value of collaboration, he has taken part in numerous projects and group shows around the globe, and throughout the years he has appeared next to or worked with a number of aspiring artists such as KAWS, The London Police and Toki Doki, and the number of brands he has collaborated with is huge, not to mention that some of them hold quite a name for themselves. From subculture heroes such as Kid Robot and Adio Shoes, to industry giants such as Coca Cola and MTV. Various magazines and websites including Juxtapoz and Beautiful Decay have issued either his words or his work, and 3 years ago he even had a special edition Converse shoe released with him name on it.Having achieved all that its pretty much fair to say that even the name Jeremyville is now a brand on its own.

Def Jam : The First 25 Years

Although making an introduction for a pioneering label such as this is pretty much useless, for those who are not aware of the impact that Def Jam has had on the music industry, a quick look at the list of artists that have been part of the label's roster up to this day, will be the only proof one can ask for. From Public Enemy and M.O.P to N.E.R.D and the Beastie Boys, Def Jam has laid the foundation for the rise of hip hop culture since the label came to reality in 1984 through the collaboration of legendary record producer Rick Rubin and hip hop persona Russel Simmons, although in a true demonstration of diversity it has even housed artists such as Slayer and Lady Gaga (!!!). The 300 page book which will be hitting bookstores on September 20th is filled with stories that the label has accrued over the years through the words of its own artists and executives, as well as behind-the-scenes photos and images from world-famous photographers like Martha Cooper and Jonathan Mannion.

ABOVE

Raised in an environment where art was a part of his family's everyday life, Above began bombing trains in California during the mid 90's at the age of 16. Three years later when he moved to Paris, he started getting acquainted with the work of local heroes such as Invader and Zevs, and that’s when he first came up with his trademark arrow pointing upwards, hence the "above" which was already like a tag of his when he was still painting trains back in the states. Moving back to California in 2003 with a whole new set of ideas in his head, he started working on his wooden arrows and in 2004 he travelled across the country hanging over 300 of them in 14 major cities, including San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City and Detroit. This was known as Above's "U.S.A. tour". He then embarked in a "European tour" but this time he chose not to place the arrows up high hanging them from telephone cables as he did in the US, but rather on the streets of the cities he visited. In the years that followed Above continued travelling non-stop visiting 26 countries in Europe and a bunch of others in Central and South America. When he came back from his “South Central tour” that included places such as Argentina and Brazil, he created a 10 minute video called South Central Tour showing various pieces he had created while visiting those countries, featured on Wooster Collective, a website residing in NYC. In the next few years he continued working on his arrows while bouncing back and forth between Europe and the US creating meticulously put together stencil pieces not only for the fun of it such as First Love, probably his most famous work to date, but also others that had a usually thought provoking political and social touch to them such as the Naked Truth in Copenhagen and Bridge the Divide on the Berlin Wall. Being a huge urban fan himself, he was convinced that the only place where his art could fit in were the streets and therefore the only time Above’s pieces were presented indoors, was next to his friend’s and iconic French street artist Blek le Rat work, at the White Walls Gallery in San Francisco in 2010
