The Soulquarians
I know this might sound a bit random, but the truth is the love i have for basketball has made me come up with this next comparison. In my eyes this collective of musicians is the equivalent of the American basketball team, also known as the Dream Team, that won the gold medal in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. It was around that time when the Golden Era of hip hop had started to emerge, but it would take approximately 10 years before some of the most talented individuals of this genre would come together to build a collective known as the Soulquarians. Comprised mostly of artists hailing from the east side such as New York,Detroit and Philadelphia, the Soulquarians was formed around 1998 by ?uestlove, drummer of The Roots, who was also the key player in terms of producing in most of the projects that the Soulquarians put down, English producer and singer James Poyser and the of course the one and only J Dilla. Before they all came together, this group of musicians already had some collaborations under its belt among its members since some of them had already performed on one another's records. The reason though that brought the three founding members together was the love they all shared for "unorthodox" musical compositions and weird sounding rhythms and beats mostly hailing from their common love for jazz,as well as the coincidental sharing of the same zodiac sign, where they drew the inspiration for their name from. Great artists such as Common, Q Tip from A Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Bilal, D'Angelo and Erykah Badu were the rest of the people that completed this massive congregation of talent which was like a shrine to what is known as "conscious hip hop" and seemed almost liked the musical offspring of an other era. Today the collective is on a hiatus, nevertheless none of its members has ever openly admitted that it has ceased to exist.

A big city with a small attitude.
We had the chance to visit Bristol for the day and capture part of the local scene. After so many things we've heard about Bristol's finest street art it was about time to find out ourselves.
Here's a hidden banksy tag we found in an alley near nelson street.

Metalheadz
Since ive been a drum n bass fan for quite some time, I thought about putting down a couple of words for the people that got me into this about 10 years ago. I’m talking about a label that took a non-mainstream type of music by the hand, and led it all the way from a small East London basement onto making hundreds of people dance in one of the country’s biggest clubs on a Friday night. Formed in the UK in a period where the rave scene was still in all its glory, Metalheadz managed to make its name synonymous to quality drum n bass for almost 20 years since its formation that dates back in 1994. For those who know what this true pioneer of a label is all about, the first name that pops to someone’s head is none other than Goldie, one of the earliest and well respected drum n bass figures worldwide. Goldie was one of its three founding members along with Kemistry (RIP) and Storm, and is still responsible up to this day for discovering and bringing new talent to the label as well as dealing with the current roster, based on his early work experience of the same kind at 4Hero’s Reinforce record label. Goldie has even put out some music using the name Metalheadz as an alias before forming the label. Together with two other labels that run along called Metalheadz Platinum and Razors Edge, one thing Metalheadz can definitely brag about is it’s back catalogue which features some of the biggest names in the genre both new and old school such as Grooverider, Adam F, Dillinja, Andy C, Photek and the list goes on. Their first big break that laid the foundation and eventually led them to the next level was “Sunday Sessions” at the Blue Note in Hoxton Square, which became a massive hit in the mid 90’s among drum n bass fans a couple of years after the label was first formed. Around that time no matter how much the label had started to grow, drum n bass was still portrayed to the public in a way that was downgrading in terms of musical orientation. The label's release “Platinum Breaks” though was about to change this notion. Promoting a different kind of drum n bass which was much more sophisticated and carefully produced, borrowing different elements from various musical genres especially dub, hip hop and funk, this compilation helped the genre to become known to a much wider audience of club goers, from hip hop heads, to fans of flat and heavy bass lines. Despite the fact that the amount of its releases has been limited compared to other labels around the country, Metalheadz is still on top of the game, its djs and producers running full house parties and scoring residencies at clubs all around London such as Herbal and Cable, and of course being regular visitors at the Fabriclive Friday.

Keep Australia Colourful
For some people graffiti is a culture on its own. For others it’s nothing but paint on a wall that no matter how good it looks, it shouldn’t be there. The debate about it is endless and I’m pretty sure you have all witnessed at least one person in your life bashing on a real nice piece of graffiti cause they simply don’t get it. Some people in Australia though decided to take this a bit too far. Around May of 2010 the New South Wales state government came up with the concept of “Graffiti Action Day”, as an effort to reduce vandalism associated with graffiti across the state. In order to combat such activities they decided to paint over as many surfaces covered with graffiti as possible. Apparently it wasn’t too easy for them to handle so local businessmen and students were asked to help them out, but a team of artists and pro-graffiti individuals decided to go against their plan with a motto of their own. The government’s “Keep Australia Beautiful” was switched to “Keep Australia Colourful” in a campaign developed by people who want to put a message across that graffiti itself is a form of art, in response to the state government's intention to remove it from city streets and public spaces and marginalize it as a part of a delinquent subculture. The people behind the “Keep Australia Colourful” campaign who’s main goal is to raise the awareness of locals on how the city would look if there was more space for artists to paint legally, also run a website called keepaustraliacolourful.org posting all sorts of events, programs as well as a section with various pictures of pieces located in the streets all across the country

The Art of Flight
Created by Brain Farm Productions in association with Red Bull, The Art of Flight is a film following a group of top notch snowboarders in a journey to the most incredible places across the globe where the beauty of nature meets the skills and most of all the guts, of some of the game’s top players such as Travis Rice and Jeremy Jones. In this new breed of adventure yet action movie, from the mountains of Chile and Romania all the way to Patagonia and Canada, the 9 member strong group rides the most dangerous and steepest slopes and makes it look like child’s play. What makes the movie so amazing are the images of almost surreal landscapes surrounding them combined with state of the art film making technology of hardcore snowboarding action which yields a literally jaw-dropping result. For all this to be done there is a whole backup network behind providing the group with snowmobiles, vans and even helicopters that take them all the way to the top of the mountains and film them while they ride all the way down. It’s not all about fun and play though since the challenges they face due to extreme weather conditions in British Columbia, a volcanic eruption in Chile and unapproachable terrain in Patagonia are quite a few, as well as the injuries that some of the riders sustain while filming in the US. The gaps and drops they nail will probably leave you speechless but just when you thought it couldn’t get any crazier, Jeremy Jones starts a downhill free ride with a camera on his head just before the end so that you can see first-hand how it feels like to ride a slope that is almost completely vertical. Bottom line is even for those of you who are not into snowboarding that much this film will definitely get your attention and leave you wondering how any of this can be possible, and those of you who are will leave you planning the next time you will be sliding down the mountain
